Former basketball star Eric Montross, who played for Lawrence North High School in Indiana and the University of North Carolina, has been diagnosed with cancer. Montross, who is now 50 years old, announced the news in a statement released on March 25, 2023.
In his statement, Montross did not specify what type of cancer he has been diagnosed with, but he did say that he plans to undergo treatment at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Montross played for Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis in the late 1980s and went on to play at the University of North Carolina from 1990-1994. He was a first-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics in 1994 and played in the NBA for nine seasons with the Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, and Toronto Raptors.
After his playing career ended, Montross became a television analyst for UNC basketball games and worked as a radio host in North Carolina. He also founded the Eric Montross Father's Day Basketball Camp, which has raised over $1 million for UNC Children's Hospital.
