The Tripura Assembly Election was held on February 18, 2018, and the results were announced on March 3, 2018. The election was a three-way contest between the incumbent Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Indian National Congress (INC).
The BJP, which had no seats in the previous assembly, emerged as the winner with a thumping majority by winning 35 out of 60 seats. The CPI(M) suffered a massive defeat, winning only 16 seats, while the Congress failed to win a single seat. The Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), which fought the election in alliance with the BJP, won 8 seats.
The BJP formed the government in Tripura for the first time with Biplab Kumar Deb as the Chief Minister. The election was seen as a significant blow to the CPI(M), which had been in power in the state for 25 years.
